Hi, I’m Jacob, the founder of Naturalized Design, LLC. I started this business because I believe the way we use our land is negatively impacting not just our environment, but our health and our children’s future. The good news? It doesn’t have to be this way.
Most suburban landscapes are high-maintenance, uninspiring, and ecologically empty. But I know from experience that with the same amount of effort you put into mowing and maintaining a lawn, you could have a thriving, beautiful garden—one that supports wildlife, is full of flowers and beautiful plants, brings you joy, and actually makes your life easier. All you need is the right knowledge and a place to start. That’s where I come in.
I’ve studied garden design and native plants extensively and have created landscapes for myself and others. As an Extension Master Naturalist with Johnson County, I stay up-to-date on best practices for native plant care and love sharing this knowledge through my work. My favorite gardens to design are family-friendly landscapes—places where kids can explore, discover nature, and families can enjoy time outside together.
Do you have a large area you want to transform or a small space that needs a refresh? Maybe there’s an awkward spot in your yard you’re unsure how to use, or you’ve been dreaming of a patio surrounded by flowers. Want a water feature but are nervous to step outside your comfort zone? I’m here to help with all these situations and more.
If you’re ready to transform your yard into something beautiful, functional, and good for the environment, I’d love to help. Let’s create a space you and your family will love for years to come.
A native plant is a plant that has evolved naturally in a specific region over thousands of years, making it perfectly suited to the local climate, soil, and wildlife. Unlike many ornamental plants found in garden centers, native plants don’t need constant watering, fertilizing, or pampering—they thrive on their own! They provide food and shelter for pollinators, birds, and other wildlife, making your yard part of the local ecosystem. Whether you prefer a structured, formal look or a more natural, flowing landscape, there's a native plant that will meet your needs. With the right plant selection, your yard will look stunning in every season. If you want a beautiful, low-maintenance garden that also supports nature, native plants are the way to go!
Some examples we love to use:
Once established, native plants require less maintenance than traditional landscaping. They evolved to thrive in local conditions, meaning less watering, fertilizing, and intervention. Thoughtful planning ensures your native garden stays beautiful and manageable without constant upkeep.
Local pollinators and wildlife depend on native plants. Many butterflies, bees, and birds rely on specific native species for survival. For example, monarch butterflies can only reproduce on milkweed. By planting native species, you create a vital habitat right in your own backyard. Unlike traditional gardens that may require pesticides and constant care, native plants have natural defenses against local pests and diseases. This means a healthier landscape for you, your family, and the environment—without the need for chemicals.
With less watering, fertilizing, and plant replacement, a well-planned native garden costs less in the long run than a conventional landscape. Plus, by reducing the amount of lawn to mow, you’ll save time and effort while cutting down on fuel and maintenance costs.
Native plants help clean the air, but the real impact comes from reducing your reliance on gas-powered lawn equipment. Less mowing means less air pollution, less noise, and a more peaceful, enjoyable outdoor space.
Native plants develop deep, fibrous root systems that stabilize soil, preventing erosion in areas prone to heavy rain or runoff. These roots also act as a natural filter, improving water quality as rainwater moves through the soil.
